Shibden Hall is a historic house dating back to around 1420, set in the wooded valley of Shibden Park just outside Halifax. Visitors walk through rooms furnished to show how the people who lived and worked there once did, with the story of the diarist Anne Lister at its heart. The adjoining 17th century aisled barn and workshops hold a carriage collection and displays on traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, coopering, wheelwrighting and saddlery, which give children a clear picture of rural working life. The grounds include a boating lake, a miniature railway, walking trails, an orienteering course and a play area, so a visit can mix a look round the house with time outdoors. Families with older children may recognise the house from the BBC drama Gentleman Jack. The site is part of the Calderdale Museums service.
Open 1 March to 3 November only; check the council site for changes.
