Pontefract Museum is a small local museum in an Art Nouveau building in the middle of Pontefract, run by Wakefield Museums and Castles. Entry is free and no booking is needed. The galleries cover the town's royal connections, its part in the Civil War, the local liquorice industry and the history of Bagley's glass. Families tend to head for the hands-on corners: there is dress-up clothing, a rocking horse, a toy market stall to trade at and craft activities. Free trails guide children around the main objects. A quieter relaxed opening runs on Tuesday afternoons, with ear defenders and a quiet tent available. The museum has no café, so visitors usually eat in the town centre or at nearby Pontefract Castle. Most visits take around half an hour to an hour.
Open year-round; closed on bank holidays.
