The National Coal Mining Museum for England sits on the site of the historic Caphouse Colliery between Wakefield and Huddersfield. Families can put on a hard hat and lamp and travel about 140 metres underground with a guide who used to work in the mines, which suits older children and curious adults. Above ground the museum has galleries on the people and mining communities of the coalfield, along with original pit-head buildings to explore. Younger visitors tend to head for the large mining-themed adventure playground, the nature trail through woodland and reed beds, and the resident pit ponies and horses. Seasonal events such as craft sessions and Christmas workshops are aimed at children. The site is spread over a wide semi-rural area, so there is plenty of room to walk between activities.
