A small town museum set in a 16th-century house in the centre of Bridgwater, the building believed to be where the seventeenth-century naval commander Robert Blake was born. Its collections cover the town's story from the Stone Age onwards, including archaeology, maritime and trading history, industrial life and everyday local traditions such as the Bridgwater pageant. Visitors can see a historical tapestry made for the Festival of Britain, and a collection of embroidery samplers stitched by young women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Entry is free, and a museum shop is on site. The museum is run by Bridgwater Town Council with the Friends of Blake Museum, a volunteer group that organises talks and events through the year. It suits a relaxed visit on a wet afternoon or a short outing from the town centre, especially for older children with an interest in history.
