Farleigh Hungerford Castle is a picturesque medieval ruin in the Somerset countryside, a few miles from Bath, looked after by English Heritage. The two surviving corner towers, the outer walls and the chapel give children plenty to climb, explore and wonder about. The chapel is the highlight for many families, with medieval wall paintings, family monuments and a crypt holding rare lead coffins, some with human-shaped faces. An audio tour and displays in the Priests' House tell the story of the Hungerford family, including tales of scandal and murder that older children often find gripping. English Heritage runs family activities on some dates, such as archaeology digging sessions in a sandpit, and offers book boxes for younger visitors. The site is open-air grounds with indoor areas, so it suits a relaxed visit in fine weather, with room for a picnic on the lawns.
