What’s there

  • Limited parking

Parking alongside Cathedral Green is limited to two hours, with some blue badge bays; Wells has several pay and display car parks nearby. Car passengers can be set down outside the museum if the green is full. Coaches must use a designated drop-off point. Museum is about 10 minutes' walk from the main car parks and bus station.

Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.

A small independent museum in the centre of Wells, on the Cathedral Green beside the cathedral. Its themed rooms cover the story of the city and the Mendip Hills, from the rocks and minerals of the hills to the bones of ancient animals found in local caves. A Jurassic sea dragon display is among the highlights, alongside geology and fossil displays and Roman and prehistoric material. There is also a collection of 18th-century embroidery samplers, sculpture on loan from the cathedral, and temporary exhibitions by local and well-known artists. A visit pairs well with the cathedral and the nearby Vicars' Close. The ground floor is accessible for wheelchairs, but the first floor has steps and uneven wooden floors. Schools are welcome, with curriculum-linked activities and trails. The museum shop sells books, cards and gifts.
