Coates English Willow is a working basket-willow farm on the Somerset Levels, run by the same family since 1819. The visitor centre explains how withies are grown, harvested and turned into baskets, furniture and artists' charcoal. Its museum displays a surprising range of objects made from willow. Visitors can take a gentle walk through the withy beds, or a longer circular route along the River Tone up to a viewpoint on Windmill Hill, and there is a courtyard of independent shops and a cafe. Guided tours cover the whole process. Older children who enjoy history, crafts or being outdoors are the most likely to enjoy it, and it works well as a relaxed half-day out.
