Dovery Manor Museum is a small local history museum housed in a 15th-century manor house in the Exmoor village of Porlock in West Somerset. Children can explore the historic building itself, including the Great Hall, and look through a collection of artefacts, old photographs, press cuttings and paintings that tell the story of the village and the surrounding parishes. Displays cover subjects such as the nearby Porlock Hill, a famous lifeboat rescue, and the local families who lived through the world wars. A changing programme of summer exhibitions adds something new each year. Behind the building is a museum garden with wide views over the village towards the moors and the sea, being replanted with herbs used for medicine and cooking when the manor was first built. The museum is run by volunteers and welcomes pre-booked school groups throughout the year. It suits families on a rainy afternoon or a walking day on Exmoor, though the steep spiral staircase to the upper floors makes it less suitable for those with limited mobility.
Seasonal: open May to October only.
