The Museum of Somerset tells the county's story from prehistoric times to the present day, set inside the historic 12th-century great hall of Taunton Castle. Families can explore nine themed galleries that use real objects, interactive games and film projections, with highlights including a fossil plesiosaur, a large hoard of Roman coins and a recreation of the Bloody Assizes. The Somerset Military Museum is housed here too, following the regiments of Somerset through war and peacetime, which older children and history fans often enjoy. The museum runs family drop-in sessions, toddler activities and seasonal events such as a Santa grotto, and there is a courtyard café. Much of the building is step-free by lift, though a few galleries need a stair lift. It is an indoor visit that suits rainy days and mixed-age groups.
