Kelham Island Museum sits on the edge of Sheffield city centre and tells the story of the city's steelmaking and manufacturing past across several floors of galleries. The highlights for children include the River Don Engine, which is shown in steam at set times on most open days, and large machines and workshop displays that show how things were made. Younger visitors can join hands-on activities, and the museum runs a family events programme through the year. The site has a cafe, a traditional pub on the grounds and a gift shop, so a visit can be stretched into a long lunch. Accessible toilets, lifts between floors and a tactile map help visitors with mobility or visual needs plan their route around the building.
