Free on-site parking on Forge Lane car park (open-air, tarmac); two Blue Badge bays about 65 to 68 metres from the main entrance, not bookable in advance. Coach parking by arrangement with the visitor centre.

Elsecar Heritage Centre sits in the former ironworks and colliery workshops of the Earl Fitzwilliam estate, in the conservation village of Elsecar near Barnsley. Its restored buildings now hold a large antiques centre, independent shops, craft workshops, cafes and a visitor centre with films and displays about the village's industrial past. Families can ride the steam railway that runs alongside the Elsecar New Colliery, and see the restored 1795 Newcomen beam engine, which is still in its original location. The site hosts themed children's activities, seasonal events and steam railway specials, so there is usually something happening during school holidays. Entry to the site is free, with a small charge for some special events. Children and grandparents can spend a relaxed morning here, and the Trans Pennine Trail runs close by for walking and cycling.
Steam railway runs on set event days; the Elsecar Heritage Railway runs events such as themed children's trains and Santa specials. Outdoor car shows and fairs run through the year.
