The Cooper Gallery sits on Church Street in the heart of Barnsley and is run by Barnsley Museums. It was opened in 1914 to house the collection of Samuel Joshua Cooper, and its permanent display holds paintings, watercolours and drawings from the 17th to the 21st centuries, including works by J M W Turner, Vanessa Bell and several Barnsley-born artists. A regular programme of temporary exhibitions brings in contemporary art, photography and touring shows, so there is usually something new to see. Families tend to come for the relaxed pace, the children's corner and the creative workshops and events the gallery runs for younger visitors. There is a small shop selling work by local makers, a café serving light lunches and afternoon tea, and a patio garden with outdoor sculptures. Admission to the displays is free.
