The ruins of a late medieval castle built as a status symbol by William, Lord Hastings. Its centrepiece is the impressive Hastings Tower, a luxurious self-contained residence within the castle grounds. During the Civil War, Ashby was a Royalist stronghold until Parliament's siege in 1646; you can explore an atmospheric underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, probably created during the siege. The castle later became famous after appearing in Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe, attracting Regency-era visitors to the ruins. There's a World Builder Challenge trail to follow.
