Rye Heritage Centre

Rye Heritage Centre is a family-friendly heritage attraction housed in a historic sail loft on Strand Quay, at the bottom of Mermaid Street in the heart of Rye, East Sussex. Run by a registered charity, it is home to the famous Rye Town Model - a stunning 1:100 scale replica of mid-19th century Rye spanning 15 square metres, crafted by local enthusiasts from 1973 and first shown in 1976. The model anchors 'The Story of Rye', an immersive 17-minute sound-and-light show that weaves 750 years of the town's history - ghosts, myths, legends and smuggling tales - through modern projection mapping. The show runs continuously through the day, with multiple language versions (subtitles in Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Dutch) and a hearing loop.

Families can also explore the lovingly recreated Victorian-style vintage penny arcade on the ground floor, full of genuine antique penny machines and seaside charm, browse the gift shop, and tackle the Smugglers Attic - an interactive, multi-media walk-through exhibit about Rye's smuggling history, best for brave souls aged 5 and over (first floor, stairs only). The ground floor offers level access throughout and is fully wheelchair-friendly; up to two small wheelchairs can be accommodated per Town Model performance. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the building and at The Story of Rye on a short lead.

The centre also runs special themed shows and events through the year, including 'Rye After Dark' (a spooky ghost show for older visitors), 'WWII: Rye's Story', and guided walking tours of Rye. Children aged 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Note that some shows feature flashing lights, loud noises and sensory effects, which may not suit younger or sensitive visitors - under 5s are free but may find some visual scenes unsettling.
