Stirling Castle stands on a volcanic crag that has been fortified since ancient times. The castle peaked in importance in the 1500s, when Scottish monarchs enlarged and embellished it. Visitors explore the castle ramparts and three main enclosures, taking in views over Stirling and the surrounding countryside. Inside are the majestic Great Hall and the refurbished Royal Palace, childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. The palace's lavish Renaissance design was commissioned by James V to display his power and taste; interiors have been recreated as they may have looked when complete. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum holds the castle's regimental history.
