Questions parents ask

Can I manage a pushchair round Heartwood Forest with a toddler?
There's a short surfaced all-access loop from the car park and a DDA-compliant path through the wood, but most paths are unsurfaced and can get muddy when wet. The terrain has some moderate gradients, so while parts are manageable for a pushchair, you'll need to be prepared for muddy conditions and uneven ground on many routes.
How long should we allow for a visit?
Heartwood Forest covers 347 hectares with a network of waymarked trails ranging from short loops to longer walks through different habitats. Plan anything from a quick hour to explore the accessible areas near the car park through to a half-day or full day if you want to follow the longer walking routes and experience the full range of woodland, meadow and ancient woodland.
Is there anywhere to eat, or should we bring a picnic?
The site has a confirmed picnic area but we haven't confirmed whether there's a café here. You should bring food and drink with you to be safe, though there are facilities at nearby Sandridge Village Hall.
Will it work in bad weather, or should we stay home if rain's forecast?
Most paths are unsurfaced and become muddy when wet, and the overflow car park can become waterlogged in wet weather. The all-access loop from the car park is surfaced, so you can still explore in light rain, but for the broader woodland walks you'll need good conditions and appropriate footwear.
Which ages get the most out of Heartwood Forest?
The site suits all ages from babies upwards, with waymarked trails suited to families and an abundance of wildlife to spot – including birds, butterflies, deer and small mammals – across the wildflower meadows, ancient woodland and open grassland. There's particular appeal for children interested in nature, trees and outdoor exploration.
