Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.
The visitor centre sits at the Canal Basin in Tiverton, the main entrance to the Grand Western Canal Country Park and local nature reserve. Its oak-clad building was opened in 2013 and houses displays on the canal's industrial history and its wildlife. Children are catered for with touchscreen games and hands-on activities, and there are 360-degree views of the towpath to explore on screen. The centre works well as a starting point before a walk, a cycle ride or a horse-drawn barge trip, and a nearby play park gives younger children somewhere to run off energy afterwards. The flat, traffic-free towpath is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, and the basin has accessible facilities. Staff can advise on the canal's walks, angling and nature trail, making it a relaxed family outing that suits most weather and most ages.
Questions parents ask
- Is the visitor centre pushchair-friendly?
- We haven't confirmed whether buggies are easily manageable throughout the centre. Contact the venue directly to ask about access with a pushchair, particularly if visiting with both a toddler and an older child.
- What should we bring, or is there food on site?
- We haven't confirmed a café at the centre. It may be worth packing snacks or a picnic to enjoy at the canal, though you could also contact the venue to check what facilities are available.
- How long should we spend there?
- The page doesn't specify a typical visit length, but the centre features interactive touchscreen displays and hands-on activities for children, alongside walks and other activities around the canal site itself. The amount of time will depend on your children's ages and interests.
