Cricklepit Mill is a restored medieval watermill on the edge of Exeter city centre, and the headquarters of Devon Wildlife Trust. Families can look round the visitor centre, where interactive displays and a printed guide explain the mill's long history, and can watch the old machinery when milling days are held. Outside, the wildlife garden is a good place for children to spot otters, kingfishers, grey wagtails and butterflies, and it includes bee-friendly borders, bug homes and a sensory section. There is a picnic area, and the garden is a pleasant spot to stop between visits to the Quayside and the Valley Parks. Entry to the mill and garden is free, with donations welcome. It suits a short, relaxed visit rather than a full day out.
