The Heritage & Military Centre occupies Magazine No.5, a Grade I listed former Royal gunpowder store on the banks of the River Thames. Inside, the rooms hold a large collection of military artefacts from the Navy, Army and RAF, with displays on the Gurkha Brigade, the Zeppelin raids of the First World War and everyday objects from past decades. Visitors can see a WW1 Livens projector, a Battle of Britain operations room clock and a Boer War mountain gun that fires on event days. Reconstructed shopfronts and a sewing machine show how local people lived and worked. The centre describes itself as family-friendly and runs guided walks, themed events, a Christmas visit from Santa and presentations for school groups. It suits families with older children and anyone interested in local history, and it is run largely by volunteers.
