The Cliff Lift is a small heritage railway that carries passengers up and down the cliff between the Western Esplanade and the clifftop promenade in Southend-on-Sea. It is a single-car funicular with a counterweight running beneath the track, and children tend to enjoy the novelty of the short ride and watching the car climb the slope. The ride is over in a couple of minutes, so it works best as a quick stop during a seafront visit, perhaps alongside a walk along the pier or a trip on the pier railway. From the top there are open views across the Thames Estuary and back towards the pier. The lift is run by volunteers, so it does not operate on a fixed timetable, and there is an accessible ramp for pushchairs and wheelchair users. Families visiting Southend for a day by the sea can combine it with the beach, the clifftop gardens and the town centre.
