Beacon Hill Fort is an independently run military heritage site on the south side of the Harwich estuary, built in the late 19th century to defend the port and used through both world wars. Families can wander the gun emplacements, search the underground magazines and tunnels (a torch can be borrowed for the dark areas) and look at the displays of uniforms and wartime artefacts. The site is partly woodland with nature trails, and there are views across the harbour and estuary. Visitors describe it as a rustic, unrestored place, so sturdy footwear and clothes that can get muddy are sensible. The fort also hosts themed events through the year, including Napoleonic weekends and seasonal evening activities. It suits children interested in history, and the open grounds give plenty of room to explore.
