The Leigh Heritage Centre occupies a restored former blacksmith's workshop in the Old Town of Leigh-on-Sea, on the Essex coast. It is run by the Leigh Society, a volunteer-led charity, and is best thought of as a small local museum rather than a large attraction. Inside, displays of photographs, artefacts and local memorabilia trace how the fishing and shipbuilding village grew into the seaside town it is today. Families with older children who are interested in history, or who are already exploring the narrow streets and waterfront of Old Leigh, can fit a visit in easily because it is compact and free to enter. Because it is staffed by volunteers and opening is not fixed, it is worth checking before a special trip. The centre sits close to the Old Town's cafes and the Leigh Heritage Trail, so it works well as part of a wider afternoon out.
