Grange Barn is one of the oldest timber-framed buildings in Europe, built by Cistercian monks in the 13th century to store the crops of Coggeshall Abbey. Its vast interior, with a long roof of carved timber, makes an impressive space for children to explore and for grown-ups to tell them about medieval farming. Inside, the collection of farm carts, wagons and agricultural machinery gives younger visitors something concrete to look at, and the barn is also used for craft and antique fairs and theatre productions, so the programme changes through the year. The site sits beside the Essex Way footpath, so families can combine a visit with a short walk to St Nicholas' Chapel and the ruins of the abbey guest house nearby. The barn is a quiet, indoor-and-outdoor visit that suits a relaxed afternoon rather than a busy play day.

Seasonal opening; the barn is closed for the winter months. Events programme varies.
