Hadleigh Castle is a ruined royal castle in Essex, begun in the early 13th century and later refortified by Edward III. Today its surviving barbican and two drum towers sit on a hillside above the marshes, and families can wander the grounds, climb the earth paths and look out over the Thames Estuary. It suits a relaxed outdoor walk combined with a bit of history, and the open grassy setting gives children plenty of room to explore. There are no facilities on site and the approach is steep and can be muddy in wet weather, so sturdy footwear is worth bringing. Nearby Hadleigh Country Park and the Hadleigh Farm Rare Breeds Centre are good companions for a longer family outing. Dogs on leads are welcome.
