Mountfitchet Castle is a living-history attraction built on the original site of an 11th-century Norman castle, rebuilt in the 1980s and opened in 1985. Families walk around the timber castle, wander through the reconstructed Norman village and watch the craft scenes and fires that show how people lived in medieval times. Tame fallow deer, goats, chickens, ducks and geese roam the grounds, and children can hand-feed some of them. Next to the castle is the House on the Hill Museum, which holds a large toy collection spanning the Victorian era to the 1990s, and the admission includes a dinosaur encounter. Hands-on interactive areas and a seasonal Halloween trail keep younger visitors busy. The site is large and sloping, so it suits a full day with plenty of walking, and it is open only in the main season.
Seasonal attraction: closed for winter, re-opening 13 March 2027. Halloween trail runs in late October.
