What’s there
- Limited parking
The windmill has its own public car park in Bellingham Lane (Mill Hall car park). The council says it is free on Saturdays from 1pm and all day Sundays; check before travelling.
Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.
Rayleigh Windmill is a restored tower mill in the centre of Rayleigh, just off the High Street, run by Rochford District Council with a team of volunteers. Inside, the museum and exhibition floors tell the story of the mill and of the town, and there are changing displays from local artists on the upper floor. Children can try a quiz in the museum, dress up in traditional costumes and learn how the windmill worked, and the ground floor includes a demonstration of the stone grinding process. Families can also try their hand at milling flour during the season. The view from the top of the building takes in the surrounding town, and a sensory garden and an original millstone sit outside. The mill suits a rainy-afternoon visit, a short history lesson for older children, or a school or group trip, which can be booked with the council team. Visitors should allow an hour or so and check opening days before travelling, as the mill is open only for part of the year.
