Sandford Mill is a former corn mill later used as Chelmsford's waterworks, standing beside the River Chelmer on the edge of the city. It is run by Chelmsford City Council as part of its museum service and holds large collections of the area's industrial heritage, including historic radio and broadcasting equipment. In the past it hosted hands-on science days for schools and families, with experiments and demonstrations spread across the historic buildings. Public access is irregular: the site has generally opened only for occasional open days and special events, so families should check the council's museum pages before planning a visit. When it does open, it suits children with an interest in science, engineering and old machinery, and the riverside setting adds to a trip.
