Layer Marney Tower is a Tudor gatehouse built from the 1510s and never finished, set in gardens and parkland overlooking the River Blackwater in Essex. Families can explore the gatehouse rooms, see the displays of heraldry and the dolls' houses, and wander the church and grounds. There is a small farm with a few animals and a play area for younger children, so the grounds suit a relaxed outing as well as a history visit. A tearoom in the old stables serves simple lunches, cakes and hot drinks. Guided tours are offered for individuals and groups, and some are pitched at families. The house also runs seasonal family events and school visits throughout the year, so it is worth checking the events programme before you travel. The site is on a rural lane, so a car is the easiest way to get there.
