Braintree and Bocking Public Gardens is a five-acre green space donated to the town in 1888 and now run by a charity. Families come for the children's play area, the wide grass lawn for picnics and running about, and the paths through more than two hundred labelled trees. A pond with water lilies and a purpose-built wildlife hide, set up for watching birds and other wildlife, give younger visitors something to look at quietly. There is a coffee house just inside the main entrance and two tennis courts for hire. Events through the year, including brass band concerts, family fun days and a Santa's grotto in winter, bring extra reasons to visit. Dogs are not admitted except assistance dogs, and the gardens close at dusk each day.
