The Epping Ongar Railway runs steam and diesel trains along a former London Underground branch through the Essex countryside and the edge of Epping Forest. Families can ride between the restored period stations at Ongar, North Weald and Epping, and on most operating days vintage London buses connect to the line, with all three transport experiences included in one ticket. The railway runs a programme of family events through the year, including seasonal specials, and the site mentions a playground and dogs being welcome on most days. Much of the operation is carried out by volunteers, and the railway is a good fit for children interested in trains and local history as well as older enthusiasts. Check the venue's events calendar before visiting, as services follow a seasonal and event-led timetable.
