The Tiptree Jam Museum sits in a converted farm building on the grounds of the Wilkin and Sons jam factory in the Essex village of Tiptree. It grew out of a private collection of pictures, documents and old preserve-making machinery that was first kept in quiet corners of the factory and later put on show. The displays cover the history of the jam business, the village and the way fruit is grown and turned into preserves, and a video presentation explains the process. The museum is small, so a visit is quick, and it suits older children who enjoy history, machinery and seeing where food comes from. Entry is free. Next door there is a tea room and a shop selling Tiptree products, and a farm tour runs during some summer months, so a family can easily make a half-day of it.
