Other World Escapes runs immersive escape rooms in Portsmouth city centre. Small teams work together against the clock, solving puzzles and finding clues to reach the objective of each story. Rooms use set design, sound, lighting and scent to build atmosphere, and players can talk to in-game hint characters for help along the way. The venue describes its games as suitable for any age, with under-16s required to be accompanied by a paying adult, so older children and teenagers tend to get the most from them alongside an adult. Sessions cater for groups from two players up to large parties, and the business says it is popular for family get-togethers, birthdays and team days. Doors are not locked, so anyone can leave a game at any point. Booking is made online in advance with a deposit.
Questions parents ask
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- Game lengths range from 45 minutes to 90 minutes depending on which escape room you choose, but you should allow extra time for briefing before and discussion after. Most visits will take around two hours total from arrival to departure.
- Which ages work best here?
- Most games suit ages 8 and up, though The Fairytale Cottage is designed for younger children. The Lock Inn carries a warning for under-14s due to strong language, and The Journey to Xibalba requires climbing and involves darkness and loud noises that may not suit very young children.
- Do we need to book in advance, or can we turn up on the day?
- Booking is required; you cannot simply turn up. You can view availability and book online through their website or call them to arrange a session.
- What should we wear or bring?
- For The Journey to Xibalba, come in trainers and comfortable clothing as it involves climbing and physical activity; helmets are provided and a waiver must be signed. For other games, standard clothes are fine, but note that The Chipshop game involves small spaces and darkness.
- Is there anywhere to eat at the venue?
- We have not confirmed a café or restaurant at Other World Escapes. However, there is a coffee and snack trailer at the meeting point for the outdoor game The Pursuit of Mr. E in Old Portsmouth.
