Alby Crafts & Gardens is a craft centre set in restored flint barns on the A140 between Cromer and Aylsham. Two courtyards hold working studios and small independent shops, where families can watch makers at work in pottery, woodturning, textiles and crochet, and see gallery displays by Norfolk artists. The surrounding gardens cover around four and a half acres of island beds, ponds, a small wood and a stream, with informal paths that suit a relaxed stroll and the occasional peacock sighting. A seasonal garden trail runs through the spring and summer, and a bistro serves homemade food and drinks in the courtyard. It suits a slower family outing where children can explore the gardens and the workshops while adults browse, and there are clay classes for those wanting a hands-on session.

Garden Fairy Trail open 31 March to 2 September; gardens are the main outdoor draw.

Questions parents ask

Is there anywhere to eat, or should we take a picnic?
The Artisan Bistro serves freshly brewed coffee, homemade food including cakes, scones, sausage rolls and scotch eggs, with gluten-free and vegan options. You can sit inside or out in the courtyard garden.
How long should we allow?
With 4.5 acres of gardens to explore, resident makers' studios to visit, and shops to browse, most families spend at least a couple of hours here. The Garden Fairy Trail adds another activity if you visit between late March and early September.
Is there anywhere for children to play, or is it just for adults?
The site features artisan studios, galleries and gardens rather than dedicated children's play equipment. The Garden Fairy Trail (open late March to early September) and weekly clay classes offer activities for younger visitors.
