St Benet's Abbey is a historic riverside site in the Norfolk Broads, reached by boat, by a marked riverside path, or by a long farm track. The highlight for families is the ruined gatehouse, with an 18th-century drainage mill built into its standing walls, so children can see a windmill and a medieval building fused into one structure. Visitors can wander the grassy precinct, look for the earthworks and remains of the church, and enjoy wide views over the marshes and the rivers. Wildlife is plentiful, so binoculars and a camera are useful. The site is managed by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, which runs guided tours on set days in summer and holds family activities during heritage events. There are no toilets or cafe on site, and the ground is uneven, so it suits children who enjoy outdoor exploring and who are prepared for a simple, rural visit.
