Toad Hole Cottage is a small Victorian-era marshman's home beside the River Ant at How Hill National Nature Reserve. The two-up, two-down cottage is furnished to show how a whole family lived on the marshes, with displays of the hand tools that Broads marshmen used for cutting reed, raking hay and digging peat. Entry is free, so it works well as a short stop within a longer walk around the reserve, the How Hill gardens and the nearby drainage windmills. Children tend to enjoy spotting the everyday objects and comparing them with modern kitchens. The site also sits on the riverside footpath and has 24-hour moorings, which makes it a handy stop for families on a boating holiday. The cottage is seasonal, so check opening arrangements before a winter visit. Boat trips and the wildlife walking trail are sold separately from the cottage.
Open roughly late March to early November; June-September is the longest daily window.
