The Mid-Norfolk Railway is an 11-mile standard-gauge heritage line running through the countryside of central Norfolk, between the restored Victorian station at Dereham and Wymondham Abbey. Trains are hauled by steam and diesel locomotives, and a ride gives children a close look at old carriages and engines. The Dereham station has a period ticket office, a tearoom, a gift shop and a small museum of railway memorabilia. Special events run through the year, including themed transport days, a model railway exhibition and seasonal Christmas trains. The line is looked after by a volunteer preservation trust, which continues to restore the route northwards towards County School.
Season runs March to October; Polar Express trains November and December; Dereham station operates all year except January per the operator's site.
