The Tolhouse Gaol is a very old stone building near Great Yarmouth's South Quay that has served as a merchant's house, a courtroom, a town gaol, a police station and, since the late 19th century, a museum. Run by Norfolk Museums Service, it tells the story of local crime and punishment through displays and hands-on activities, with original prison cells and a notorious dungeon to explore. Older children and teenagers tend to find the stories of smugglers, pirates and witchcraft the most gripping, while younger visitors enjoy the interactive displays. The building has been used for paranormal investigations and filming as well as family visits. The museum is currently closed for building works, so check the venue's own site before travelling.
