Hungate is a small arts and heritage centre housed in the former medieval church of St Peter Hungate, tucked among the old streets near Elm Hill in central Norwich. It runs free exhibitions that explore medieval art and architecture, alongside contemporary artists who respond to the same heritage, and it presents at least two or three shows a year with accompanying lectures and events. There are themed workshops for families, and a set of replica tomb brasses where children can make their own brass rubbing with materials provided. Permanent display boards explain features of the building, and there is a small garden to sit in. Because it is a converted church rather than a purpose-built attraction, the visit is quiet and suits families who enjoy looking closely at old stained glass, carved angels and roof timbers. The building is open at weekends for most of the year, so it works well as a rainy-afternoon or weekend outing in the city.
Open weekends March to October; closed for winter with group visits by appointment only.
