Forncett Industrial Steam Museum is a volunteer-run museum in the South Norfolk countryside, built around a collection of large stationary steam engines. Its best-known exhibit is an engine that once raised and lowered Tower Bridge in London, and the collection also includes the Soame Steam Cart, a steam-driven car dating from the late nineteenth century. On steam-up days the engines are fired up and can be seen working, and guided tours run through the day. Children under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult, so it suits families with older children who enjoy machinery and the story of the Industrial Revolution. A cafe serves refreshments on steam-up days. Younger children may find the static displays less engaging than hands-on play venues, so it works best as an educational outing.
Questions parents ask
- Is there anywhere to eat during a visit?
- There is a café at the museum. The venue also does not rule out bringing a picnic, though we have not confirmed a dedicated picnic area.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page does not specify a typical visit length. This will depend on how much time you want to spend with the stationary steam engines and other exhibits on display.
- Can I park there?
- Yes, parking is available at the museum.
- What ages is it suitable for?
- The museum describes itself as 'a great day out for all the family' with an award-winning collection of stationary steam engines, but does not specify which age groups get the most from it.
