The Museum of the Broads sits on the riverside at Stalham and tells the story of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads through its people, wildlife, boats and industries. Children can try hands-on exhibits, dress up, take on the detective trail, and captain the play boat, so the museum suits younger visitors as well as adults. The collection includes unusual local boats and tools, a wartime rescue craft, and changing temporary exhibitions. Families can add a river trip on an electric launch or a Victorian steam boat, and the site is dog friendly. A small cafe and shop serve light refreshments and ice cream by the water. It is run by an independent charitable trust, and the museum is closed for the winter, so check the seasonal dates before travelling.

Questions parents ask

Is the museum manageable with a buggy, and will it work with both a toddler and older child?
We haven't confirmed whether buggies are practical here, but the museum features hand-on exhibits, historic boats and a play boat, suggesting interactive activities for children of different ages. The café and shop are on site for breaks during your visit.
How long should we allow for a visit?
A typical visit is 90 minutes, though this depends on which activities interest your family. You could extend this with a 50-minute boat trip on Marsh Harrier or Falcon if you'd like.
Can we get food, or do we need to bring a picnic?
There is a café on site. We haven't confirmed a picnic area, so check ahead if you'd prefer to bring your own food.
What should we bring that we might forget?
Dogs are welcome, so bring yours if you have one. The museum offers activities like knot tying and dress-up play, so consider comfortable clothes that allow your children to move freely.
