The Spitfire Visitor Centre occupies Hangar 42, a Bellman hangar built for the RAF in 1939 at the edge of Blackpool Airport. Inside, the hangar has been set up as a wartime fighter station, with a replica operations and briefing room, displays of crash relics and a collection of replica Spitfires, a Hawker Hurricane and a Messerschmitt Bf 109E. Visitors can sit in a Spitfire cockpit, and there is a full-size Spitfire flight simulator where you take the controls of a replica Spitfire MKV. Volunteers run the centre and often talk through the exhibits, and there is a WW2-themed NAAFI café on site. It suits older children with an interest in aircraft and history as well as families looking for a rainy-day visit, and the main hangar floor is flat and wheelchair-friendly. Opening days are seasonal and depend on volunteer cover, so check before setting out.
Seasonal: public open days run in spring and autumn, closed December to March.
