Astley Hall is a historic country house in Astley Park on the edge of Chorley town centre, now run by Chorley Council as a museum and art gallery. Visitors walk through rooms furnished to show the families who lived there from the Charnocks to the Tattons, and the highlight is the mid-17th century plasterwork ceilings in the Great Hall and drawing room. Children can follow the house's stories, including its link to Oliver Cromwell and a bed said to be his, and the hall runs school sessions linked to the curriculum. An internal courtyard and a separate Coach House Gallery add to the visit. The surrounding park has wide paths, play areas and a cafe, so a trip can easily combine a museum visit with time outdoors. The hall is best suited to older children and adults with an interest in history, and some upper floors are reached by stairs only.
