Ribble Steam Railway is a standard gauge heritage line on the old Preston Docks, run largely by volunteers. Families can ride a steam or diesel-hauled passenger train along the dock line, crossing a swing bridge and running beside the River Ribble with views over the city. The museum displays a range of industrial and passenger locomotives, some of which children can get hands-on with, alongside displays on the history of the docks and their railways. There is an outdoor playground for younger children and a tea room on site. Special events through the year include a Christmas steam train adventure, so the railway suits a relaxed family afternoon as well as steam enthusiasts. Trains usually run on Saturdays from Easter to September, with extra event days, so check before travelling.

Main season Easter to September with trains on Saturdays; themed events from February; Santa steam trains in December.
