A volunteer-run heritage centre housed in the restored Victorian station buildings at Carnforth, on the platform where the 1945 film Brief Encounter was shot. Families can wander the exhibitions on the station's history and the people who worked on the railway, including displays of tools and memorabilia from the age of steam. A small vintage cinema shows the film, and visitors can spot station features that still survive from the movie. The Furness and Midland Hall hosts model railway exhibitions, film nights and other events through the year, and the adjoining Brief Encounter refreshment room serves food and drinks. The centre suits train-mad children, grandparents who love classic cinema, and anyone curious about local history on a rainy day out. It is a compact visit, best combined with a stroll along the platform or a trip to the nearby Lancashire coast.
