Potters Bar Museum

Potters Bar Museum tells the story of the town's growth from a small village on the Great North Road into a busy present-day town. It is small and easy to take in during a short visit, with displays of local pottery and artefacts found during building work, natural history items such as fossils and puddingstone, and Roman coins from a local hoard. The museum's largest display covers a Zeppelin shot down over the town in 1916, and there is a collection of novelty and historic telephones, some in working order, that visitors are invited to pick up and handle. Two temporary exhibitions a year change the displays, and the stewards, who are volunteers, are happy to answer questions and help with local history enquiries. School and group tours can be arranged, which makes it a useful stop for older children studying local history. The museum is free to enter and is reached by a lift from the ground floor.
