Ashwell Village Museum occupies a gabled, timber-framed building with an overhanging upper floor, dating from the 16th century, on the old market place of this North Hertfordshire village. Inside, the rooms are filled with everyday objects that trace life in Ashwell and the surrounding countryside from the Stone Age to the present day, and the collection includes items from the parish such as a Roman marble statue. It is run by volunteers and suits families who enjoy local history and old buildings, with children admitted free. The museum is small, so a visit works well as a relaxed hour of looking, asking questions and spotting things from the past. Nearby, the village church and its streets make an easy follow-on walk. Opening is limited to some Sunday and bank holiday afternoons, with other visits arranged by appointment, so check ahead before travelling.
