Hertford Museum occupies a 17th-century town house in the centre of Hertford, the county town, and has been open since 1903. Its collections are wide-ranging: archaeology, natural history, geology, fine art, world cultures, social history and the Hertfordshire Regiment. Children are well catered for, with hands-on touchable items, a pretend shop, activities for younger visitors and a child-sized toilet, and families often combine a visit with a family activity session held during school holidays. Ground-floor galleries show early museum objects such as exotic animals, fossils and Japanese armour, while upstairs displays focus on the town and its people. A highlight is the Addis collection of toothbrushes. The Jacobean-style knot garden is a quiet place to pause, and the museum runs school workshops.
