A historic schoolhouse museum set in original Victorian and Edwardian school buildings in the centre of Hitchin. Visitors can walk through unaltered classrooms, see how lessons were taught in the nineteenth century, and look at the photographs, equipment and personal accounts that bring school life of that era to life. Children's admission includes a craft activity, and groups can book a Victorian lesson run for them, which makes it a useful outing for school-age children and their families. Parts of the site are over a century old, so the buildings are cold in winter and two rooms, the Gallery Classroom and the Headmaster's House, can only be reached by steps. A small café serves visitors, and the museum has an accessible toilet with baby-change facilities. It suits families with older children who enjoy history and hands-on learning more than running about.
Very cold and hard to heat in winter; visitors are advised to bring extra layers.
