Snodhill Castle is a ruined early Norman castle on a ridge in the Golden Valley, set within a ten-acre site of earthworks, a keep and a bailey. It is looked after by a volunteer charity that has been excavating and restoring the remains, so families can see archaeology in progress and fenced areas show where the digging is happening. Children can climb the steps up to the keep for views over the medieval deer park and the hamlet below, and there is plenty of grass for a picnic. The ground is rough, uneven and muddy after rain, with steep slopes and no handrails on the steps, so it suits older children and sure-footed walkers best and needs close supervision for younger ones. Dogs on leads are welcome. Guided tours are offered by booking, and the surrounding footpaths link into longer walks.
Ground is rough and muddy when wet; steps to the keep have no handrails. Site is an ancient monument, no camping or fires.
