Kinnersley Castle is a privately owned, family-run historic house in the Herefordshire countryside, close to the book town of Hay-on-Wye. Although it is called a castle, the building that stands today is mostly a remodelled Elizabethan manor house, with traces of an older medieval site. Guided tours take visitors through oak-panelled rooms and show the original plasterwork ceiling in the solar. Because the house is still a family home, it is open to the public only on a small number of days through the year, so tours are best booked ahead. The guided format suits older children who enjoy history, stories and spotting hidden details. Outdoor Shakespeare performances have also been staged on the lawn in recent summers.
